Bridging Home and School Learning

Our work creating and consistently improving the Litmus platform is a function of our belief in the potential of technology to help teachers. We want to provide an operating system for the blended learning classroom that has more integrated features for more effective instructional practice, ultimately leading to more engaging experiences for students. But, we also know that parents and teachers want their kids to be safe, responsible, and purposeful when they’re online.

Litmus is designed to be a closed system – the features interact with one another, and the Content Bank allows instructional items to easily adapt across different tools – Interactive Video, Social Documents, Simulations, Assessments, Digital Flash Cards, and our groundbreaking Confidence Assessment functionality that gives great insight into student learning and confidence levels. When students are using the Litmus Learn platform, there’s no need for them to be using lots of different apps, websites, or media.

Parents can be sure that if students have work assigned on Litmus, they can stay on Litmus without distraction or the need to navigate away from our learning tools. We also want to use Litmus as a way to help parents create clear expectations around technology and learning at home and in school.

Here are some of the most easy-to-implement strategies that might help parents have trust that their child is using devices and tools at home for their intended purposes:

🔹 Have students use the device in a public space in the home, like the kitchen (not in their bedroom, especially overnight)

🔺 Limit how much time they can have and use the device

🔹 Have your child show you their assignments so you know what they’re doing on the device

🔺 Review the child’s work to see how they did on specific tasks

🔹 Password protect the ability to download apps, and use parental controls for websites and devices

🔺 Use a password on your router, so they can only connect to WiFi when you allow it

🔹 No messaging apps like WhatsApp on the device, and definitely no social media apps. Don’t forget that even without the app, students can still access social media through browsers like Safari and Chrome – so use parental controls on those as well

Litmus Learn can help bridge the gap between home and school, giving students a seamless learning experience that has them practicing new skills, remediating pandemic learning loss, and preparing to responsibly use advanced technology in the future.
